"More Power to You" (1937)

Next up is another of those not-quite-all-star hodgepodges, “Merry-Go-Round of 1938,” which was actually released by Universal in 1937!
Among the songs is “More Power to You,” which was recorded by veteran bandleader Jimmie Grier and vocalist Dick Webster for Decca:
I do dig Jimmie’s “The Musical Host of the Coast” tagline!

"You're As Pretty As a Picture" (1938) - Part 2

Here’s another version of “You’re As Pretty As a Picture” from 1938’s “That Certain Age.” It’s Tommy Dorsey and his Clambake Seven with Edythe Wright on Victor:
A lovely record, it’s a bit of a change of pace from TD’s usually more raucous Clambake Seven sides!

"You're As Pretty As a Picture" (1938)

While hanging around 1938, we run into this lovely sheet muisc for a movie starring another teenage singing star – Deanna Durbin in “That Certain Age” from Universal.
It’s interesting that Deanna was a bigger star right out of the gate than Judy Garland after they had both appeared in a short for MGM but the studio let Deanna slip away to Universal.
In any event, here’s the song “You’re As Pretty As a Picture” as recorded by Gene Krupa and his band with Irene Daye on the vocal:

This was an early recording date for Gene and his new band after he had left Benny Goodman’s band, but they already sound great!

"Meet the Beat of My Heart" (1938)

Still in 1938, we come across this nice sheet music spotlighting Judy Garland from MGM’s “Love Finds Andy Hardy.”
Judy didn’t commercially record “Meet the Beat of My Heart,” but among the recordings is this version by veteran drummer/bandleader Ben Pollack and his Orchestra with Paula Gayle:
Pretty snappy!

"Good Night Angel" (1938) - Part 2!

Hal Kemp and his Orchestra appeared in “Radio City Revels” and although they didn’t play ”Good Night Angel” in the movie, they did cut the song for Victor Records with vocalist Bob Allen:

Curious that Bob’s last name is spelled wrong on the label!

"Good Night Angel" (1938)

Jumping back to 1938, we arrive at RKO’s “Radio City Revels,” which is another sort-of all-star B-movie cast picture!
Popular radio singer Kenny Baker introduced the hit song “Good Night Angel” in the film, but he didn’t record it commercially.
Here’s a nice version by Artie Shaw on Brunswick Records back when he was still billed as “Art Shaw” with a vocal from Nita Bradley:
I don’t think Artie Shaw was capable of making a bad record!

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter!
Let’s listen to Johnny Long’s version of "Easter Parade," recorded for Signature Records in 1947:
Have a great day!

“Looking for the Lovelight in the Dark" (1930)

We follow Jack Whiting back to 1930 for the movie “Top Speed” starring comedian Joe E. Brown, whose wide mouth was rivaled only by Jack’s future co-star Martha Raye!
The song is “Looking for the Lovelight in the Dark,” written by Al Dubin and Joe Burke, who also wrote “Highway to Heaven.”
Like “Highway to Heaven,” Jackie Taylor recorded “Looking for the Lovelight in the Dark” for Victor Records, this time with Leigh Harline supplying the vocal:
I don’t know a lot about Jackie Taylor other than he was a violinist and passed away in 1932 after only a couple of recording sessions, but he left some lovely records behind!
