"You Do the Darnedest Things, Baby" (1936)

It's September 1st, Pumpkin Spice is in the air an so is College Football!

In keeping with the situation, let's hear a song from the Twentieth Century Fox feature "Pigskin Parade" of 1936!

The movie is a lot of fun, with one of those kind of B-movie all-star casts!

What's pretty cool is that young, unknown Alan Ladd is one of the students!

It's fascinating that Stu Erwin was actually nominated for an Academy Award for this movie as Best Supporting Actor in the then-brand new category! He is very funny, but that's a retro head-scratcher!

As for the song, here's "You Do the Darnedest Things, Baby" on Bluebird Records by Charlie Barnet and his Orchestra:

It's funny to hear early records by the Barnet band, especially those with Charlie singing, as they seem at odds with his slightly later hard-swinging band of "Cherokee" and the like!

Speaking of swinging, Count Basie couldn't not swing, and although he didn't record "You Do the Darnedest Things, Baby" commercially, he did perform the song back in the day, as heard on this aircheck featuring his great singer Jimmy Rushing:

That was some aggregation!
