"My Varsity Girl I'll Cling to You" (1928)

We move into 1928 with a college-themed song from a college-themed movie, "My Varsity Girl I'll Cling to You" from the aptly titled "Varsity" from Paramount!

I understand that this is a lost film, which is the unfortunate fate of many older films. Maybe a print will surface someday, but I imagine that the efforts to find it are not as strong as those for something like "London After Midnight" inspire!

But we do have the sheet music for the song and a couple of recordings!

This first one on the Duophone label is credited to Tex Brewster's Orchestra, but is apparently really Meyer Davis's orchestra:

Pseudonyms and uncredited vocalists were common back then, but that's definitely Smith Ballew on the vocal!

An interesting counterpoint is an uncredited Scrappy Lambert on this Victor record by Nat Shilkret and the aptly named Victor Orchestra:

Both good, but one nod I will give to the Victor record is that I think the title works better parenthetically as "My Varsity Girl (I'll Cling to You)" rather than as one run-on title!
